Mission and Goals

The mission of the Associate of Science in General Science Degree Program is to provide challenging, innovative and creative educational opportunities for students in science and math.  To achieve this mission, the math and science department is committed to the following goals:

  • To create hands-on learning environments that encourage application of science and math principles.
  • To prepare students for continued study in science and health-related fields
  • To encourage the development of skills in analysis, critical thinking, and scientific observation
  • To provide an environment conducive to meaningful group discussion, team building, and problem-solving relating to math and science topics.
  • To create research projects and cohorts which integrate the math and science disciplines to provide significant, evocative application of topics.
  • To instill the desire to continue learning, in and out of the classroom.

To achieve these goals, the faculty of the Math and Science Department are committed to regular evaluation of student needs, programs, courses, textbooks, student success rates, faculty development, and technology.  The faculty of the Math and Science Department fully acknowledges that the sole purpose and motivation behind departmental goals sits in front of faculty in classrooms everyday.  The faculty is committed to encouraging, nurturing, and developing life-long learners in the Math and Science Department at Louisiana Delta Community College.

Program Description

The Associate of Science Degree in General Science is designed as a transfer program for students who plan to transfer to a baccalaureate degree institution and major in one of the science or health professional areas, such as dentistry, medicine, pharmacy, optometry, physical therapy, nursing, physics, chemistry, or biological science. For students not planning to transfer to a four-year institution, the Associate of Science in General Science Curriculum may lead to employment in one of the various health or science fields or health-related para-professions.

Program Outcomes

Successful Associate of Science in General Science graduates will be able to:

  • Find and use information using state of the art technology and conventional research methods
  • Apply critical thinking and problem solving techniques to scientific applications.
  • Develop mathematical strategies to solve real world problems.
  • Prepare graduates for successful transfer to four-year programs.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the components of the College General Education requirements.

Student Organizations

  • SciQuest  A student organization to further the study of science.

  • TEAM Delta – Technology, Engineering, and Modeling club. TEAM Delta was formed in January 2005 and allows students to participate in a variety of mathematics and physics related endeavors such as robotics and engineering. The following faculty, adjunct and full-time, is utilized for the science courses related to the degree program.
